Matvei Michkov and the Flyers try to snap a two-game losing streak tonight in Calgary, and the road has been the problem all season.
Philadelphia sits 30th in the NHL at 4-10-4 after Thursday's 3-2 loss at the Rangers. The Flyers are 1-6-1 away from home, and a team with a -22 goal differential doesn't get many easy chances to fix that.
The Flames aren't flying either. Calgary is 24th at 7-9-1 and dropped Friday's game 3-5 to Anaheim, so both teams arrive on two-game skids.
Michkov has been the one steady piece. He leads the Flyers with 10 goals and 13 points, and five of those goals came on the power play. But he is also a -11, which says the team around him hasn't held up its end. We took a look at Matvei Michkov needing help in Calgary on Saturday.
Rick Tocchet, Michkov and Cole Knuble met with the media after Saturday's practice in Calgary, the Flyers noted.
Knuble is the name to watch beside Michkov. The 22-year-old has 3 goals in 8 games this season, which makes him one of the few forwards giving the Flyers anything on the scoresheet right now.
Can Trevor Zegras and Zach Aston-Reese reach milestones?
Trevor Zegras is three goals shy of 100 for his career. He sits at 97 over 367 games, and he has 4 goals and 14 points through 18 games this season.
Three in one night would be a stunner. Still, the milestone is close enough that every Zegras shot in Calgary carries a little extra weight, especially with six of his assists coming on the power play.
Zach Aston-Reese is a different story. He is one goal away from 50 in the NHL, with 49 over 416 games, but he hasn't played a game this season. Zach Aston-Reese being one goal shy of 50 is a nice storyline on paper, and it only matters if Tocchet decides to use him.
The bigger picture is uglier. Twelve points leaves Philadelphia with only two teams below it in the NHL standings.
A win in Calgary won't change that picture by itself. But with the Flyers 1-6-1 on the road, it would be the first sign that Tocchet's message from Saturday is landing.
