The NHL Rumour Report is pointing to Daily Faceoff's Anthony Di Marco, who says the Flyers have a long-standing interest in Senators forward Ridly Greig.

It's a rumor with some history. According to the report, Philadelphia has liked Greig going back to the 2020 NHL Draft, when Ottawa took him 28th overall in the first round.

The Rumour Report relayed that Di Marco was told the Flyers aren't sure what Greig's overall upside is, and that the Senators have no appetite to trade any of their centers, according to sources, citing Daily Faceoff from October 27.

That second part matters. Interest is one thing, but the report doesn't describe any talks, an offer or a price.

Greig is 24 and has four points in 14 games this season, with a +6 rating and one short-handed goal. He went without a point in Sunday night's 6-3 loss at Anaheim, though he played 17:32 and finished +2.

Over his career, he has 108 points in 261 games, along with 43 goals. Those are depth numbers, and they help explain why the Flyers question the ceiling.

Why the Flyers would even make the call

Philadelphia is 4-8-4 and sits 27th in the NHL, with a goal differential of -19. A team in that spot can't be picky about forwards who bring energy and a bit of offense.

The Flyers did beat Utah 6-3 on Sunday, and Rick Tocchet's group has won its last game. But the road record of 1-5-1 is the kind of thing that keeps a front office looking around.

Ottawa sits seventh in the league at 9-6-1, and Andrew Campbell's team has no reason to sell. A player the Senators drafted and developed, on a deal that runs through 2028-29, isn't an obvious piece to move when they're winning.

The doubt over his upside also cuts both ways. If Daniel Briere isn't convinced Greig is more than a bottom-six piece, paying a real price for him would be a mistake. A team 27th in the standings needs difference-makers, not a player it merely likes.

For now this looks like interest, not a trade. The Flyers host Minnesota on Tuesday, while Ottawa visits Buffalo on Wednesday.
