The Flyers loaned defenseman Hunter McDonald to the Phantoms of the AHL on Saturday, the club announced.

The move comes as Philadelphia sits 30th in the NHL at 3-8-4, with a Sunday game against Utah next on the schedule.

McDonald, a 24-year-old out of Fairport, NY, played five games this season. He did not register a point and went minus-2 with 10 penalty minutes.

Those 10 penalty minutes are the number that jumps out. For a defenseman who is not producing, giving the other team power plays on a club already leaking goals is a tough sell.

The Flyers have allowed 51 goals in 15 games against 29 scored, a differential of -22. Nobody on the back end is going to be spared the scrutiny.

Rick Tocchet's group is also coming off a 5-2 loss at Washington on Wednesday, its third straight defeat. The road record sits at 1-5-1.

McDonald's NHL résumé is short. Over his career he has played six games, with one assist and a +1 rating, and the 6'4, 240-pound blueliner was a sixth-round pick, 165th overall, in 2022.

What the Flyers' blue line looks like without McDonald

The team has not said who steps into the lineup, and nothing in the announcement points to an injury. The player is listed with no injury, so this reads as a lineup decision.

That matters because Philadelphia has gone 3-5-2 over its last 10 and is 2-3-3 at home. The margin for error on the back end is thin, and every defenseman who stays is now under the microscope.

A loan to the AHL is also not a permanent verdict. McDonald's deal runs through 2027-28, which gives the organization time to see whether more minutes in the AHL sharpen the game that cost him in the NHL.

Daniel Briere and Tocchet have not explained the thinking behind the move, and the club's post only lists the transaction.

Here is the line from the club:

The Flyers announced that McDonald has been loaned to the Phantoms.

Philadelphia hosts Utah on Sunday, November 1, and the first look at the new-look defense comes then.
