The Flyers just announced that Joseph Woll will start in net tonight against the Rangers, a call for a team stuck at 4-9-4.
It's a goalie decision with real weight behind it. Philadelphia sits 30th in the NHL out of 32 teams, and the crease is one of the few places the coaching staff can still move pieces.
The team made it official with a lineup update on its account.
Woll has played 8 games this season, while Daniel Vladar has played 9. That is about as even as a split gets, which tells you nobody has taken the job and run with it.
Vladar was not named for this one, and the team gave no reason in its announcement. Tocchet and his staff have simply gone in a different direction for the visit to Madison Square Garden.
Head coach Rick Tocchet and forward Porter Martone also spoke to the media ahead of tonight's game, according to the team.
No quotes from either of them have come out yet, so what Tocchet says about the goaltending will matter once it does.
Why the Flyers can't afford another slow road night
The road is the problem. Philadelphia is 1-5-1 away from home, and we looked at the Flyers' road record heading into New York on Wednesday.
The goal column tells the rest. They have scored 37 and allowed 58, a -21 differential that is the worst part of this team's profile. A goalie change alone won't fix that, but it can't hurt to try.
The Rangers are 8-7-1 and, like the Flyers, are 1-5-1 on the road. They went 7-2-0 at home, though, and they won their last game 3-1 against the Blues. Philadelphia lost its last one 4-2 to the Wild on Tuesday.
Woll has to be sharper than the numbers around him. A team giving up this many goals can't keep rotating between two goalies without one of them taking hold of the job, and tonight is another audition.
After the Rangers, the Flyers will keep looking for an answer in net, and one more shaky night would put real pressure on that rotation.
