The Flyers sit 29th in the NHL and head to New York on Thursday with a road record that has to change.

Philadelphia is 4-9-4 after Tuesday night's 4-2 loss to the Minnesota Wild, 12 points in 17 games. Rick Tocchet's group has now lost its last game and has little room left to keep dropping points.

The Metropolitan Division doesn't offer much cover either. The Flyers are 8th in the division, while the Rangers, their opponent Thursday, are 3rd at 8-7-1.

The goal differential is the ugliest number on the board: 37 goals for, 58 against, a -21. After 17 games, that is not a bounce problem. The Flyers have simply been outscored by too much.

Then there's the road. Philadelphia is 1-5-1 away from home against 3-4-3 in its own building, and the trip to New York is the next chance to fix it. Read in context, the Flyers' road test against the Rangers has real weight.

Tuesday did have a couple of bright spots. Denver Barkey scored his first goal of the season, and Daniel Vladar stopped 18 of 21 shots in the loss.

Neither was enough. The Flyers are 4-4-2 over their last 10, better than the overall record, so the recent games matter in deciding whether this team is trending up or just treading water.

That stretch gives Thursday some context, and the opponent adds another layer.

Why the Rangers game is a different kind of road test

New York is 7-2-0 at home, which makes the building a tough place for a team that has won once on the road all season. The Flyers can't lean on the Rangers' overall record being modest at 18th in the league.

The Rangers also arrive with some momentum, having beaten St. Louis 3-1 on Tuesday. Their goal differential is +1, nothing special, but it sits miles above Philadelphia's.

The Flyers have leaned heavily on Matvei Michkov carrying the offense, and a road team that scores 37 goals in 17 games can't survive on one line. Barkey's goal helped, but the group needs more of it.

Thursday at the Rangers is the next test, and Philadelphia's 1-5-1 road mark is the number Tocchet will be asked about afterward.
