Simon Benoit scored his first goal as a Flyer, but Philadelphia still lost 3-2 at the Rangers on Thursday night.
It's the second straight defeat for a team that now sits 30th in the NHL at 4-10-4. The five-game road trip opened with a loss, and the hole keeps getting deeper.
Noel Acciari and Benoit gave the Flyers a 2-1 lead in the second period. For a long stretch, Rick Tocchet's group looked like it had finally found a way to close one out on the road.
Then the third period arrived. New York scored twice, the tying goal coming on a power play with 6:08 left, and Tye Kartye finished it off with the game-winner.
Joseph Woll made 25 saves on 28 shots and didn't lose this one. The skaters in front of him did, by giving up a man advantage late and then failing to answer. Joseph Woll's goalie nod in New York was the right call, and the result still went the wrong way.
The Flyers' account put the final on the board for everyone to see.
Reporter Mollie Walker noted that Pavel Dorofeyev got his first big goal as a Ranger and that New York is now 8-2 at home.
That home record matters. Philadelphia walked into a building where the Rangers rarely lose and still had the lead in the second period. Blowing that edge is what stings.
Why Sunday in Calgary matters for the Flyers
The road record is the real problem now. Philadelphia is 1-6-1 away from home with a -22 goal differential, 39 goals for against 61 against, and the Flyers' road struggles before New York were already a concern.
Calgary is no pushover, but it is beatable. The Flames are 7-8-1 and host Anaheim tonight after a 2-1 overtime loss at Seattle on Wednesday.
Drop a game to a team that is 24th in the NHL, and a bad start to this trip turns into a bad month. A team this far down the standings can't keep handing back leads and expect the points to come anyway.
The Flyers are back in action Sunday in Calgary.
Sunday decides whether this trip stalls out in the first week or starts to turn.
