Joseph Woll made 25 saves Thursday night, and the Flyers still fell to 1-6-1 on the road heading into Sunday's game in Calgary.
The 3-2 loss at the Rangers opened a five-game road trip. It also stretched Philadelphia's losing streak to two games, and the Flames are the second stop.
Noel Acciari and Simon Benoit scored for the Flyers. Tye Kartye scored the game winner for New York, and Woll stopped 25 of 28 shots. Goals and goaltending were both there. The points weren't.
That's been the pattern away from home. The Flyers are 3-4-3 at home, which is nothing to brag about, but the road record is a different level of trouble.
A team sitting at minus-22 in goal differential can't keep giving away one-goal games. Rick Tocchet's group has found ways to score in recent outings, yet the results haven't followed.
Benoit's goal was his first as a Flyer, a point we covered after the loss in New York. It was a nice moment on a night that ended the way too many of them have.
What the Flyers need from Calgary onward
Calgary isn't an easy place to fix things. The Flames are 7-8-1 overall and 5-3-0 at home, and they play Anaheim tonight before Philadelphia arrives.
Calgary dropped a 2-1 overtime game at Seattle on Wednesday, so Sunday's group won't be short on motivation. The Flames are 2-5-1 on the road themselves, which makes their building the place where they've done most of their winning.
The Flyers need one thing from this trip more than any other: a road win that doesn't need a perfect night from Joseph Woll's start against the Rangers to get there. Right now every road game seems to turn on one bounce.
Sunday in Calgary starts a stretch of three more road games after it. Whatever happens, the Flyers won't be back in their own building for a while.
